Black Neon Tetra: Not Actually a Neon Tetra
Published: 2026-10-21 · FishyKart Blog
The Black Neon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi) shares a name with the Neon Tetra but not a genus - it's a distinct species entirely separate from Paracheirodon, the genus that includes both Neon and Cardinal Tetra. The naming similarity is a common source of confusion, since the fish looks and is bred nothing like a colour-variant Neon.
Why the Name Is Misleading
"Black Neon Tetra" suggests a dark-coloured version of the Neon Tetra, but the two aren't in the same genus and don't share close ancestry within the tetra family. The name reflects a superficial resemblance in body shape and the horizontal-stripe pattern common to many small tetras, not a genetic relationship.
Appearance
Instead of the blue-and-red stripe pattern of true Paracheirodon tetras, the Black Neon Tetra has a solid black horizontal stripe with a metallic white or silvery stripe running directly above it - a distinctly different look once you know to compare stripe colour rather than just body shape.
Care Requirements
- Size: 3-4 cm
- Tank size: 10 gallons (40 litres) minimum for a shoal of 6+
- Temperature: 22-27°C
- pH: 6.0-7.5
- Diet: omnivorous - micro pellets, flakes, occasional live/frozen food
Care overlaps closely with true Neon Tetras - see the Neon Tetra care guide for detailed water and tank setup that applies equally well here.
Tank Mates
Despite the taxonomic difference, Black Neon Tetras mix well with Neon and Cardinal Tetras in a shared shoal - their water and behavioural needs align closely enough that mixed community tanks of all three are common and successful.
