Glass Fish Tanks: How to Choose Size and Thickness

A glass aquarium is the standard choice for home fish tanks: it stays clear, resists scratches and lasts for years. The right size depends on the fish you want and the space and stand you have.

Size and glass thickness

  • Small (up to 60 cm, about 30-60 L): 5 mm glass; for guppies, bettas, small tetras.
  • Medium (60-90 cm, 60-150 L): 6-8 mm glass; for community tanks.
  • Large (120 cm+, 200 L+): 10 mm or more, usually with bracing; for oscars, flowerhorns and big catfish.

Bigger tanks are easier to keep stable: temperature and water quality change more slowly.

Glass vs acrylic vs plastic

Glass is cheaper than acrylic for the same size and scratches less. Acrylic is lighter and stronger but scratches easily. Plastic tanks and bowls are fine for temporary use or small fish; see plastic fish tanks.

Before you fill it

  • Stand: level and strong; water weighs 1 kg per litre.
  • Cycle the tank for 2-4 weeks with a filter running before adding most fish.
  • Leak test on the floor for a day before setting it up.
