How to pick healthy fish
- Clear eyes and clean fins, no white spots, torn fins or cotton-like patches.
- Active swimming, not gasping at the surface or lying on the bottom.
- Good appetite: healthy fish eat within a day of arriving.
Matching fish to your tank
- Small tanks (20-40 L): guppies, endlers, ember tetras, cherry shrimp.
- Community tanks (60-150 L): neon tetras, mollies, dwarf gouramis, corydoras.
- Large tanks (200 L+): oscars, flowerhorns, green terror cichlids, kissing gouramis, red tail catfish (very large).
Price lists by species: guppy fish price, molly fish price, goldfish from ₹25, neon tetra care sheet and price.
Fish that should not share a tank
Keep goldfish apart from tropical fish (different temperatures), aggressive cichlids apart from small community fish, and fin-nippers such as tiger barbs away from long-finned bettas and fancy guppies.
Bringing fish home: the first 24 hours
- Float the bag in your tank for 15-20 minutes so the water temperature evens out.
- Mix tank water into the bag a little at a time over another 15-20 minutes.
- Net the fish into the tank and throw the bag water away instead of pouring it in.
- Keep the lights off for a few hours and do not feed on the first day.
FAQ
How many fish can I add at once?
Add a few at a time, especially in a new tank, so the filter bacteria can keep up. Wait 1-2 weeks between groups.
What water temperature do most aquarium fish need?
Most tropical community fish do well at 24-28°C; goldfish and white cloud minnows prefer cooler water.
