Electric Blue Crayfish - Complete Care Guide
Published: 2026-10-20 · FishyKart Blog
The Electric Blue Crayfish (Procambarus alleni) is native to the wetlands of Florida, where wild individuals range from brown-tan to naturally blue. The vivid, uniform cobalt-blue sold in the aquarium trade is a selectively-bred aquarium strain - striking, but not the typical colour you'd see in the wild population it comes from. It reaches 10-13 cm and lives 3-5 years with stable care.

Tank Requirements
- Tank size: 20 gallons (75 litres) minimum per crayfish
- Temperature: 18-25°C
- pH: 7.0-8.0, calcium-rich water to support shell growth
- Substrate: sand or fine gravel for burrowing
- Decor: caves and hiding spots, especially post-molt
- Lid: secure - they climb and escape given the chance
Molting and Colour
Like all crayfish, this species molts periodically to grow, and colour intensity can vary slightly around molts as the new shell develops its pigmentation. The bred-for cobalt-blue strain maintains its colour reliably through molts under decent care - a fish that fades noticeably and doesn't recover its blue over the following weeks is more likely showing a stress or diet issue than a normal colour cycle.
Feeding
Sinking pellets, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein (shrimp pellets, bloodworms), same general diet as other freshwater crayfish. They'll also opportunistically graze algae and biofilm.
Tank Mates
Handle tank mates the same way as any crayfish - fast, robust fish that stay out of claw range are safer than slow or bottom-dwelling species. See the White Lobster guide for the same compatibility logic applied to a different crayfish colour form.
