Types of Betta Fish: Every Tail Shape Explained
Published: 2026-10-22 · FishyKart Blog
Betta types are named mainly by tail shape, with colour and pattern (like Koi) layered on independently - much the same relationship as tail shape and colour in fancy Guppies. Sorting out the tail-shape names first makes every other Betta description easier to parse.

Tail Types
- Veiltail - long, trailing tail that droops downward; the most common, easiest-to-find fancy type
- Halfmoon - tail spreads to a full half-circle (180°) when flared
- Crowntail - reduced webbing between fin rays gives a spiky, crown-like edge
- Delta / Super Delta - tail spreads close to Halfmoon's 180° but not quite as wide
- Double Tail - the caudal fin is split into two lobes
- Elephant Ear (Dumbo) - oversized pectoral fins resembling ears, layered on top of any tail type
- Plakat - short-finned, closer to the wild-type body; hardier and less fin-rot-prone
Colour Is a Separate Layer
Koi (a mottled, Koi-carp-like pattern), solid colours, and marble patterns can all appear on any of the tail types above - a "Koi Halfmoon" and a "Koi Plakat" share the same colour pattern on two entirely different fin shapes. Treat tail shape and colour as two independent choices, not a single combined category.
Which Type Is Easiest to Keep?
Plakat, by a clear margin - the short fins are less prone to fin rot (see the fin rot guide) and don't create the same swimming handicap as a large flowing Halfmoon or Veiltail. Fancy long-finned types are still very keepable, just with a bit more attention to water quality.
