Blood Parrot Cichlid - Complete Care Guide
Published: 2026-10-20 · FishyKart Blog
The Blood Parrot Cichlid is a man-made hybrid, first bred in Taiwan around 1986 by crossing South and Central American cichlid species - it doesn't exist in the wild. Its defining trait is a small, round, malformed mouth opening, a direct result of the hybridisation, which shapes almost everything about how the fish should be fed rather than being a health defect to treat.
The Mouth: What It Means for Feeding
A Blood Parrot's mouth doesn't open and close the way a standard cichlid's does, which makes gripping live prey or large whole foods genuinely harder for it than for an unmodified fish. Sinking pellets sized appropriately for a small, round mouth are generally the easiest staple; frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp work well as supplements. Avoid relying on foods that require strong biting or tearing.
Tank Requirements
- Tank size: 30 gallons (115 litres) minimum for one
- Temperature: 24-27°C
- pH: 6.5-7.5
- Filtration: canister rated 3-4× tank volume
- Water changes: 25-30% weekly
Behaviour and Tank Mates
Blood Parrots are generally semi-peaceful - noticeably less confrontational than many cichlids in their ancestry. Reasonable tank mates include other similarly sized, non-aggressive cichlids, larger tetras, and robust catfish. Avoid pairing with genuinely aggressive cichlids that could exploit the Parrot's feeding limitations by outcompeting it at every meal.
