Endler Guppy — Complete Care Guide
Published: 2026-09-19 · FishyKart Blog
The Endler (Poecilia wingei) is a small, wild-type livebearer native to the Paria Peninsula of Venezuela, closely related to the common guppy but noticeably smaller — males reach just 2-3 cm. It's prized for vivid, neon-flecked natural colouration rather than the exaggerated fins bred into fancy guppy strains, and for being, if anything, an even more prolific breeder than its larger relative.

Tank Requirements
- Tank size: 5-10 gallons (20-40 litres) for a small group — their small size means less space is genuinely needed than for standard guppies
- Temperature: 22-27°C
- pH: 7.0-8.0
- Filtration: gentle sponge filter — Endlers and their fry are small enough to be at risk from strong intakes
- Plants: dense planting (Java Moss, Guppy Grass) for fry cover
Feeding
Micro pellets or crushed flakes as a staple, with occasional live/frozen baby brine shrimp or daphnia for colour and conditioning — the same general approach as feeding a standard guppy, just in smaller portions given the fish's size.
Breeding
Endlers breed readily and continuously in a stable tank with both sexes present — a single mating produces multiple litters via sperm storage, same as guppies. The practical difference for hobbyists is population control: an unmanaged Endler tank fills up faster than most keepers expect, simply because so little goes wrong in the process.
