Kamfa Flowerhorn: How to Identify the Real Thing

Published: 2026-09-18 · FishyKart Blog

A genuine Kamfa Flowerhorn is identified by three traits appearing together: sunken (recessed) eyes, a fan-shaped tail with no point, and a large, round nuchal hump (kok). Any one of these traits alone doesn't confirm Kamfa lineage — it's the combination that separates a true Kamfa from a Kamfa-cross or a different Flowerhorn line entirely.

The Three Identifying Traits

  • Sunken eyes — recessed into the head rather than protruding, a Kamfa-specific trait not seen in most other Flowerhorn lines
  • Fan-shaped tail — spread wide with no central point, versus the more pointed tail typical of Zhen Zhu and other lines
  • Large, round kok — the nuchal hump Kamfa is specifically bred to maximise

King Kamfa vs Standard Kamfa

"King Kamfa" isn't a separate hybrid — it's a grade within the Kamfa line, referring to fish with especially large, round kok development and strong pearl/scale patterning across the body. A standard Kamfa without that grade-level development is still genuinely Kamfa; King Kamfa is simply the top tier of the same line.

Kamfa vs Zhen Zhu (Pearl)

These are the two lines most often confused. Zhen Zhu is bred for pearlescent scale sheen on a rounder body with a more pointed tail; Kamfa is bred for the sunken-eye, fan-tail, large-kok combination above. A fish with pearl-sheen scales but a pointed tail and normal (non-sunken) eyes is more likely Zhen Zhu-lineage than Kamfa, regardless of what it's labelled as in a listing.

Why Kok Size Varies

Kok development depends on genetics, sex (males typically develop larger humps), age, and diet quality — a young Kamfa can be genetically correct for the line while showing little visible hump yet. Judging a young fish purely on current kok size, before it's had time to mature, is a common mistake when buying juveniles.

Care

Kamfa care is identical to any Flowerhorn — same 75+ gallon tank, 28-30°C water, and solitary housing covered in the main Flowerhorn care guide. Nothing about the Kamfa line changes tank size or water chemistry needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a Flowerhorn a Kamfa?

Three physical traits together: sunken (recessed) eyes, a fan-shaped tail with no point, and a large, round nuchal hump. A fish with only one or two of these traits is more likely a Kamfa cross than a purebred line.

What is a King Kamfa?

A specific high-grade Kamfa line bred for an especially large, round kok and strong pearl/scale patterning. It's a grade within Kamfa, not a separate species or hybrid combination.

How is Kamfa different from Zhen Zhu (Pearl) Flowerhorn?

Zhen Zhu is bred more for pearlescent scale sheen and a rounder body, and typically has a pointed rather than fan-shaped tail. Kamfa is bred specifically for the sunken-eye, fan-tail, large-kok combination.

Do all Kamfa Flowerhorns develop a large kok?

No — kok size depends on genetics, sex (males typically develop larger humps), age, and diet. A young Kamfa may show little hump development yet still be genetically correct for the line.

Are Kamfa Flowerhorns more aggressive than other types?

Not specifically — aggression in Flowerhorns is a trait of the hybrid generally, not something that varies meaningfully by Kamfa vs other lines. All Flowerhorn types are typically kept alone for this reason.
