Pregnant Guppy: Signs, Timeline & When to Separate Her
Published: 2026-09-19 · FishyKart Blog
A pregnant (gravid) guppy shows a swelling, increasingly square belly and a gravid spot near the anal fin that darkens over roughly 21-35 days of gestation. The urgent part isn't spotting the pregnancy — it's timing the move to a safe space correctly, since guppy fry are born fully free-swimming and immediately at risk of being eaten by anything in the tank, including the mother.
Gestation Timeline
| Stage | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Week 1 | Slight belly rounding; gravid spot barely visible |
| Week 2 | Clear belly swelling; gravid spot darkening |
| Week 3-5 | Boxy, squared belly; gravid spot at its darkest; increased hiding |
Warmer water (toward the upper end of the 22-28°C range) shortens gestation slightly; cooler water lengthens it.
When and How to Separate Her
Move her once the belly is squared and the gravid spot is at its darkest — a breeding box or a small dedicated tank both work. Moving too early adds stress without benefit; waiting too long risks missing the birth entirely in a busy community tank.
Protecting the Fry
Guppy fry are born free-swimming and large enough to eat crushed flake immediately, but that doesn't make them safe — adult guppies, including the mother, will eat fry given the chance. Dense floating plants (Guppy Grass, Water Sprite) give fry places to hide in a community tank; a dedicated breeding box removes the risk entirely for the first week or two.
