Rare Molly Fish Colors: Blue, Red, Gold & Silver Lyretail

Published: 2026-09-17 · FishyKart Blog

Most Mollies sold in the trade are Black, White, or Dalmatian — colours that breed true reliably, which keeps them cheap and widely stocked. A handful of other colour morphs, including Blue, true Copper-Red, and certain Gold and Silver Lyretail lines, are noticeably harder to find, not because they're delicate, but because their genetics don't breed as consistently.

Why Some Colours Stay Rare

Black and White Mollies breed true — pair two Black Mollies and the fry are reliably Black. Rarer morphs like Blue and Copper-Red typically depend on less stable genetic combinations, so a litter from two rare-coloured parents often includes a mix of on-colour and off-colour fry. That inefficiency is exactly why breeders and shops stock less of them — not because the fish themselves are harder to keep.

The Uncommon Colours

  • Blue Molly — a steel-blue to silvery-blue body sheen, among the least consistently available colours
  • Copper-Red Molly — a true reddish-copper tone, distinct from the more common orange Gold Dust variety
  • Gold Dust Molly — orange-yellow with a metallic sheen; more available than Blue or Copper-Red but still less common than Black or White
  • Silver Lyretail — a pale silvery body combined with the extended, forked Lyretail fin trait covered in the Molly types guide

Care Is Identical

None of these colours change tank size, water chemistry, or diet requirements — everything in the main care guide applies exactly the same. Rarity here is a supply-and-genetics story, not a hardiness one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the rarest Molly fish color?

Blue Molly and true Copper-Red Molly are among the least commonly stocked, since both colours are harder to breed true and consistent compared to Black or White lines.

Why are some Molly colours harder to find than others?

Colours like Black and White breed true reliably from parent to offspring. Blue, Red and Gold morphs involve less stable genetic combinations, so a batch of fry from the same parents often includes off-colour individuals, making large-scale breeding less efficient for sellers.

Is a Gold Dust Molly the same as a Gold Molly?

Names vary between sellers, but "Gold Dust" typically refers to an orange-yellow body with a metallic sheen, distinct from a flatter, more uniform yellow sometimes labelled simply "Gold." Check photos rather than relying on the name alone.

Do rare-coloured Mollies need different care?

No — colour morph has no bearing on tank size, water chemistry, or diet. Care is identical to any standard Molly; rarity is purely about colour genetics and supply, not hardiness.

Can breeding two common-coloured Mollies produce a rare colour?

Occasionally, if both parents carry a recessive colour gene, but it's unpredictable and not a reliable way to obtain a specific rare colour. Buying from a line already selectively bred for that colour is far more consistent.
