GloFish Explained: What They Are, Care & US Legality
Published: 2026-10-21 · FishyKart Blog
GloFish is a trademarked brand of genetically modified fish carrying an inserted fluorescent protein gene, first developed for pollution-detection research before being brought to market as an ornamental pet. It's a brand, not a species - the underlying fish is an otherwise ordinary Zebra Danio, Tetra, Barb, or Betta, each fluorescing under normal and especially blue/UV light.

Where the Glow Comes From
The fluorescence is genetic, not a dye or coating - a gene for a fluorescent protein (originally studied for detecting environmental pollutants) is inserted into the fish's genome and expressed throughout its tissue. It's permanent, present from birth, and passed to offspring, which is exactly why breeding restrictions exist (below).
Species Available
- GloFish Danio - the original, based on Zebra Danio; see the Zebra Danio care guide for the base species' needs
- GloFish Tetra - based on various tetra species
- GloFish Barb - based on barb species
- GloFish Betta - based on Betta splendens
Care for each is identical to its non-fluorescent base species - the modification affects only colour, not husbandry.
Breeding and Legal Restrictions
GloFish are patented. If a pair breeds in a home tank, the resulting fry are still genetically GloFish, and selling those offspring commercially without licensing infringes that patent - this is a real, actively enforced restriction, not a technicality. Keeping offspring as pets isn't the issue; selling them is.
US Legality by State
GloFish are legal to buy and keep in most US states. California is the notable exception - state rules prohibiting the sale of genetically modified organisms extend to GloFish specifically, making them unavailable for legal retail sale there.
