Zebra Danio - Complete Care Guide
Published: 2026-10-21 · FishyKart Blog
The Zebra Danio (Danio rerio) is a small, active schooling fish known for two things: its distinctive horizontal blue-and-gold stripes, and an unusual tolerance for cooler water - 18-24°C - that most tropical community fish can't handle. It's also, notably, the original base species used to create GloFish.

Tank Requirements
- Tank size: 10 gallons (40 litres) minimum for a group of 6
- Temperature: 18-24°C - a heater is often unnecessary in a consistently warm room
- pH: 6.5-7.5
- Filtration: standard HOB or sponge filter; Danios tolerate moderate current well, being active swimmers
- Tank shape: prioritise length over height - Zebra Danios are horizontal swimmers that use the full length of a tank
Why They Tolerate Cooler Water
Zebra Danios come from fast-flowing, seasonally cool streams in South Asia, which gives them a genuinely wider safe temperature range than most tropical fish sold alongside them. This makes them a practical choice for an unheated tank in a moderately warm room, though they also do fine in a standard heated tropical setup - the cooler tolerance is a bonus, not a requirement.
Feeding
Omnivorous and unfussy - quality flakes or micro pellets as a staple, supplemented with occasional live or frozen foods (daphnia, brine shrimp) for variety. Feed small amounts 2× daily.
Schooling Behaviour
Zebra Danios are constantly active schooling fish and need a group of at least 6 to feel secure - fewer than that and they become visibly skittish and stressed, darting and hiding rather than displaying their normal confident, active behaviour.
