Most stocking advice scales fish count with bioload — bigger tank, more waste capacity, more fish. Otocinclus break that pattern: at 3-5 cm and grazing mostly algae, a group of six produces very little waste even in a 10-gallon tank. The real ceiling on "how few can I keep" isn't the filter, it's the fish's own shoaling instinct — drop below 5-6 and they spend more time hiding and stressed than grazing, which shows up as slower growth and poorer colour rather than obvious illness.
