Unlike a hang-on-back filter, everything happens inside the tank — there's nothing clipped to the outside rim.

Sunsun is a well-known manufacturer of budget-friendly aquarium pumps and filters, and their submersible pump/filter combo units like the JP-012F are popular for smaller to mid-size tanks where a discreet, fully internal filter is preferred over an external hang-on unit — useful in tanks with an open-top or unusual rim that a clip-on filter wouldn't fit well.
