About & Origin

The "Golden Algae Eater" sold in the aquarium trade is a freshwater fish — the gold/yellow ornamental colour strain of the Chinese Algae Eater, Gyrinocheilus aymonieri, native to fast-flowing rivers and streams across Southeast Asia and southern China (Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Malaysia). The wild-type is a mottled brown-grey; the golden form is a selectively bred colour variant of the same species, not a separate one.

This fish's most distinctive feature is a specialised sucker-like mouth, adapted for clinging to rocks and surfaces in swift current and rasping algae and biofilm from them — a genuinely effective algae-eating structure, though despite the common name it feeds on a broad range of detritus and biofilm, not algae exclusively.

Golden algae eaters are considerably larger and longer-lived than most fish sold for algae control: they can reach roughly 25–28cm (10–11in) at full maturity in ideal conditions, and can live over a decade, which makes them a much bigger long-term commitment than their small size at point of sale suggests.

This combo pack supplies more than one individual, but it's worth knowing upfront that this species becomes genuinely territorial and intolerant of others of its own kind — and of similarly shaped fish — as it matures, which shapes how a multi-unit purchase like this should realistically be stocked (see Requirements below).

Because of the size and temperament this species eventually reaches, many public aquariums and experienced keepers specifically warn new buyers away from picking one up purely as a small "cleaner fish" for a modest community tank — a decision worth making with the adult fish in mind, not the juvenile sold in the shop, since rehoming an outgrown or increasingly aggressive adult later on is considerably harder than planning ahead.

Requirements

This is an important species to buy with realistic expectations: golden algae eaters are effective algae grazers only while young, and become progressively more territorial, semi-aggressive, and prone to harassing tankmates (including sucking on the slime coat of slow-moving or flat-bodied fish) as they mature — a well-documented trait that surprises many buyers who picked one up purely as a small "cleanup" fish.

Given their adult size (up to ~28cm) and territorial nature, a single specimen per tank is the realistic long-term stocking plan for most home aquariums — keeping multiple individuals from a combo pack like this together long-term in anything less than a genuinely large aquarium (180+ litres, with plenty of visual breaks/territory) risks ongoing aggression between them.

A tank of at least 200 litres is recommended for a full-grown adult, with strong filtration to replicate the well-oxygenated, flowing water this species evolved in.

Diet should include algae wafers, blanched vegetables, and occasional protein, since older individuals graze less on algae alone and need a more rounded diet.

Because of the size and temperament realities here, many experienced keepers treat this as a species suited to larger, semi-aggressive community setups rather than a general-purpose algae-control fish for a small planted tank.

If keeping more than one from this combo pack long-term isn't realistic in the available tank size, some keepers choose to rehome extras to a larger aquarium (a local fish club, aquatics shop, or another keeper with adequate space) once territorial behaviour becomes apparent, rather than persisting with an overcrowded, stressful setup for the fish involved.

Plenty of rockwork, driftwood, and broken sightlines help even a single adult feel secure and reduce restless patrolling behaviour, and a secure lid is worth having since this is an active, sometimes surprisingly strong fish capable of dislodging loosely-fitted tank furniture.

Compatibility

Best matched with larger, robust tankmates that can hold their own — avoid small, slow, or flat-bodied fish that a maturing golden algae eater may harass:

Water & Care Conditions

Golden algae eaters come from well-oxygenated, flowing rivers and do best when that's reflected in the tank:

  • pH: 6.5–7.5
  • Hardness: soft to moderately hard (5–15 dGH)
  • Temperature: 22–26°C (72–79°F)
  • Oxygenation/flow: appreciates good water movement and high dissolved oxygen, reflecting its native fast-flowing river habitat — a still, low-flow tank is a poor match for this species
  • Filtration: strong biological and mechanical filtration is worthwhile given the bioload of an adult-sized specimen

Water quality and turnover matter more here than for many smaller community species, simply because of how large and active this fish becomes.

Because of its native fast-water habitat, this species also appreciates well-oxygenated water with visible current — an air stone or spray bar aimed to create surface movement is a simple, worthwhile addition alongside standard filtration.

A sponge filter or well-guarded intake is worth using in any tank housing this species, since its sucker-mouth and active foraging behaviour mean it will investigate and sometimes attach to filter equipment, decor, and tankmates alike as it explores its territory.

Regular partial water changes (roughly 20–30% weekly) help keep nitrate low, which matters more as the fish grows into its full adult size and bioload — a large, established golden algae eater eats and produces waste on a scale closer to a mid-sized cichlid than to the small algae-control fish it's often marketed alongside.

Keep an eye on tankmates' flanks and fins after introducing this species, since sucking or rasping on the slime coat of slower, flat-bodied fish — a behaviour that intensifies with age — is one of the clearest early warning signs that this individual has outgrown its current stocking and needs more space or fewer, more robust companions.
