The biological role is the one that actually keeps a tank's fish alive long-term, which is why aggressive full cleaning or replacement of filter media is discouraged — it wipes out that bacteria colony.

Tank size fit: as the mid-tier model in this range, the 128F suits small-to-medium community tanks with moderate stocking — larger or more heavily stocked tanks would do better with the 138F or a higher-flow hang-on/canister filter instead.
Installation: mounts via suction cups against the inside glass, fully submerged; aim the outlet flow to create gentle overall circulation without blasting directly at slow-swimming or long-finned fish.
Cycling: like any new filter, it needs several weeks to build up the beneficial bacteria colony that actually processes waste — introduce fish gradually rather than fully stocking a tank with a brand-new filter on day one, to avoid an ammonia spike, or seed the sponge with media from an already-established tank to speed the process up considerably.
Noise as a diagnostic: a correctly primed, healthy filter runs with a quiet, steady hum; a rattle or buzz is usually a sign the impeller has trapped debris or the unit needs re-priming with water, and is worth checking promptly.
Pairing with a heater: positioning the outlet flow near a heater helps distribute warmed water evenly through the tank rather than letting temperature stratify between the heater and the far side of the tank.
Water level: keep the waterline a few centimetres above the intake and outlet at all times, since evaporation between top-offs can gradually expose the intake and cause the filter to draw in air and run noisily.

- Continuous operation: designed to run 24/7 — switching it off for extended periods starves the bacteria colony of oxygenated flow and lets it start to die back.
- Outlet direction: periodically check that the spray bar or outlet nozzle hasn't drifted to point directly at decor or the glass, which can reduce effective circulation across the rest of the tank.
- Housing and suction cups: check the mounting suction cups periodically, since they can lose grip over time and let the unit shift or tilt, occasionally exposing the intake above the waterline.
- Consumables vs. the motor unit: the sponge cartridge is the main wear item and is cheap to replace on its own; the motor/impeller housing normally outlasts several sponge changes before needing attention.
- Power outage recovery: after any extended power loss, check the filter restarts and primes correctly rather than assuming it has — a filter that fails to reprime runs dry and can overheat its motor.
