RS 2000 HANG ON FILTER

Being a hang-on unit rather than an internal or canister filter, it's quick to lift off the rim for a media check or clean without draining water or disturbing decor, which is a big part of why this style of filter is such a common choice for small to medium freshwater and saltwater setups alike.

Positioned as the second tier in the RS hang-on lineup above the entry RS-1000, the RS-2000 trades a modest amount of extra flow for a correspondingly larger media chamber — meaning more surface area for bacteria to colonize and a somewhat longer stretch between needing to rinse or replace media, which matters more on a slightly larger or more heavily stocked tank than it does on a tiny nano setup.

Power: mains electricity via its own plug/adapter — no battery option, and the cord should be routed clear of splashes, ideally with a drip loop so any water running down it drips off before reaching the socket.

Mounting: clips onto the back rim of an open-top tank; needs a little clearance behind the tank for the filter box itself to sit without pressing against a wall, and the rim style needs to be a standard open lip rather than a fully enclosed hood.

Setup: load the media chamber with the supplied sponge/cartridge before first use and prime the siphon by filling the intake tube with water so it starts drawing as soon as it's powered on rather than running dry. Give a newly set up filter a few days to a couple of weeks to build up its bacteria colony before you consider the tank biologically established — a bottled bacteria starter added at setup can shorten this window. Compatibility with tank type: works in both freshwater and marine setups, though in a saltwater tank the media and housing will need more frequent rinsing to clear salt creep and mineral buildup than in freshwater.

• Housing cleaning: wipe down the outside box and return spillway occasionally, since mineral deposits and light algae growth on the visible plastic build up over months even though they don't affect filtration itself
• What not to do: never rinse the media under hot tap water or with soap/detergent, both of which will kill the bacteria colony outright and can leave harmful residue behind even after a rinse
