XY 280 SPONGE FILTER

A sponge filter is one of the gentlest and most reliable forms of aquarium filtration: a block of porous polyester sponge fitted over a rigid tube, driven entirely by an air pump rather than an internal motor. Air bubbled up through the tube creates a gentle lift that draws tank water through the sponge, trapping debris (mechanical filtration) while the enormous surface area of the sponge itself hosts a thriving colony of beneficial bacteria (biological filtration).

The XY-280 is rated for up to around 10 gallons (roughly 38 litres), sized for small to medium tanks. Because sponge filters have no fast-spinning impeller and produce very gentle water movement, they're a favourite for fry tanks, shrimp tanks, and betta tanks — anywhere delicate or slow-swimming animals could otherwise get pulled into a stronger filter's intake.

Being 100% polyester, the sponge is durable, doesn't break down in water, and can be rinsed and reused repeatedly rather than needing frequent cartridge replacement.

Sponge filters are also widely used as biological "seed" media — a mature, established sponge moved into a new or struggling tank instantly transplants a working colony of beneficial bacteria, which is a common trick for speeding up cycling a new tank or stabilising one recovering from an ammonia spike.

A sponge filter is entirely passive by itself — it needs an air pump connected via airline tubing to function at all. Without a pump pushing air through the lift tube, no water moves through the sponge.

Rated for up to about 10 gallons/38 litres, so match it (or add a second unit) if the tank is meaningfully larger. It typically sits on the substrate, ideally weighted or wedged so it doesn't drift, with enough surrounding space for water to be drawn in through the sponge freely.

A flow-control valve on the airline lets you fine-tune bubble output and current strength, useful for tuning flow down for delicate fry or shrimp without needing a smaller pump.

Sponge filters are also genuinely easy to run in pairs or alongside a small powered filter for redundancy — since they're inexpensive and simple, many keepers of small tanks add a second unit purely as a backup biological filter rather than relying on a single point of failure.

Check that the air pump chosen can actually reach the tank's depth (deeper water needs more pump pressure to push bubbles all the way down the lift tube), and keep the airline itself reasonably short and unobstructed for steady output.
