Micro-Life S2 is a liquid beneficial-bacteria supplement, not a medicine for a specific disease — it's a concentrated culture of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria (including Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter strains) that carry out the biological filtration every aquarium depends on.

Those bacteria are what convert toxic ammonia (from fish waste and uneaten food) into nitrite, then convert that nitrite into far less harmful nitrate — the nitrogen cycle that keeps aquarium water safe between water changes. A newly set-up tank doesn't have an established bacterial colony yet, which is exactly when ammonia and nitrite spikes are most dangerous.

This 100ml bottle keeps the bacteria preserved in a dormant liquid form that only activates once released into aquarium water, so the product has a genuine shelf life rather than dying off in the bottle.

"Cycling" a new aquarium -- building up enough bacteria to safely process fish waste -- normally takes several weeks of patient, low-stocking-density waiting if left entirely to develop on its own, and ammonia/nitrite spikes during that window are one of the single most common causes of new fish dying within their first few weeks in a new tank. A bacterial supplement doesn't eliminate that risk entirely, but it meaningfully shortens the dangerous window by seeding the colony rather than waiting for it to establish from scratch.

New tank setup: dosing a bacterial supplement at setup — and again for the first week or two — helps establish the biological filter faster than waiting for bacteria to colonise on their own, shortening the risky early "cycling" period.

After a filter clean or medication course: both can knock back your existing bacterial colony (rinsing filter media in tap water kills bacteria via chlorine; many medications are not selective about which bacteria they affect) — redosing afterward helps the colony recover faster.

Ongoing use: some keepers dose periodically as routine maintenance, particularly in heavily stocked tanks where the bacterial colony is working hard.

It won't instantly fix an ammonia spike on its own — pair it with a partial water change if you're seeing a spike right now, and let the bacteria build up the tank's ongoing capacity to handle waste going forward.

Doesn't replace testing: even with a bacterial supplement, it's worth testing ammonia and nitrite during the first few weeks of a new tank rather than assuming the product alone guarantees safety -- think of it as significantly improving your odds, not as a substitute for monitoring.

Marine and freshwater: this product is formulated to work in both freshwater and marine setups, so the same bottle covers a mixed collection of tank types if you keep both.

Dose according to tank volume as directed on the bottle; it's generally safe to dose more liberally than a medication since it's a biological supplement, not a chemical treatment.
