Platy Fish: Price in India, Types and Care
Published: 2026-11-06 · FishyKart Blog
A platy fish (Xiphophorus maculatus, also called the Southern platyfish) costs ₹29 to ₹69 at FishyKart, making it one of the cheapest colourful fish you can buy. It is a small livebearer from Mexico and Central America: males reach about 4 cm, females about 6 cm. A group fits a 2 feet tank, it likes the hard, slightly alkaline tap water found in many Indian cities, and it is comfortable at 20-26°C without a heater for most of the year. Expect babies: a healthy female gives birth about once a month.

Platy Fish Price in India
FishyKart lists five platy varieties. All are the same species and need the same care; the price difference is only colour and pattern.
| Platy variety | Price at FishyKart | Trio (1 male + 2 females) |
|---|---|---|
| Southern Platy | ₹29 (regular ₹50) | ₹87 |
| Mickey Mouse Platy | ₹49 (regular ₹100) | ₹147 |
| Coral Red Platy | ₹49 (regular ₹100) | ₹147 |
| Mango Platy | ₹59 (regular ₹80) | ₹177 |
| Swordtail Platy | ₹69 (regular ₹99) | ₹207 |
Prices are taken from FishyKart's own store and change with offers and stock. A trio of the cheapest variety costs less than ₹100, and because platies breed on their own, a starting trio can turn into a full tank within a few months. For orders and delivery details, see Contact us.
Platy Types and Colours
SeriouslyFish counts "dozens of selectively bred varieties", naming mickey mouse, wagtail, tuxedo, moon, blue, red, comet and hi-fin among them. The names describe one of three things:
- Body colour: red (coral red), yellow-orange (mango), blue, or the wild-type olive of the Southern platy.
- Tail or body pattern: Mickey Mouse (a black spot at the tail base flanked by two smaller spots, like a cartoon face), wagtail (black fins and tail on a coloured body), tuxedo (black on the rear half of the body).
- Fin shape: hi-fin (a tall dorsal fin) and sword-shaped tails. Platies cross readily with swordtails (X. hellerii) and variatus platies (X. variatus), which is how many sword and hi-fin forms appeared.

Platies are hard-water fish. Unlike neon tetras, they do not need RO or softened water, and the moderately hard supply water in many Indian cities suits them well. Their temperature range sits lower than most tropical fish, so a heater is only useful in cold North Indian winters, set to about 22-24°C. The bigger risk in India is heat: keep the tank away from windows and direct sun, and run the filter so the surface keeps moving. Change 25-30% of the water weekly with dechlorinated water at the same temperature.
Tank Setup and Tank Mates
A 2 feet tank (60 x 30 cm base) meets both sources' minimum and holds 6-8 adult platies. Add live plants such as java moss or hornwort: platies nibble algae and soft plant growth, and dense plants are where newborn fry hide.
SeriouslyFish calls the platy "very peaceful" and says it shows "none of the aggression of some swordtails and mollies, and even males tolerate one another." Good tank mates share its hard, alkaline water:
- Other livebearers: mollies, guppies, swordtails.
- Active schooling fish: zebra danios, white cloud minnows, rosy barbs.
- Bottom and cleanup crew: corydoras, bristlenose pleco, nerite snails.
Avoid large cichlids such as oscars and flowerhorns, which eat small fish, and soft-water specialists such as discus.
Male vs Female and Breeding
Males are smaller and have a gonopodium, a pointed, rod-like anal fin; females are larger, rounder and have a normal fan-shaped anal fin. Keep 2-3 females per male. FishBase notes platies mature in 3-4 months and give birth to 20-80 young after about 24-30 days; SeriouslyFish gives 4-6 weeks and up to 80 fry. The fry are "quite large" and eat powdered flake or baby brine shrimp from day one. Adults eat fry, so if you want to raise them, give the tank thick plants or move a heavily pregnant female to a separate breeding box.
One caution from SeriouslyFish: "Many commercially bred platies are not very hardy due to inbreeding and over-production." Pick active fish with full fins and clean bodies, avoid any that sit at the bottom with clamped fins, and quarantine new fish for 1-2 weeks before adding them to an existing tank.
